FANNY CROSBY
More than any other songwriter, Fanny Crosby captured the attention of millions in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century with her simple yet meaningful country gospel songs. She devoted her long, fruitful life to transposing the great spiritual truths of the Christian faith into singable rhyme and melody. Fully persuaded of those truths, her life enjoyed and radiated Blessed Assurance (to quote her famous song recorded by countless country stars) .
Her emotion-tugging, country songs still attract world attention having been translated into many languages. Countless celebrated country artistes throughout this century have articulated her song material including Eddy Arnold, Pat Boone, and George Hamilton IV who devoted concept albums to solely Fanny Crosby compositions. It is also possible to assemble and compile Fanny Crosby albums by Tennessee Ernie Ford, Burl Ives, Jimmy Davis, George Beverly Shea, and many other artistes from existing recordings! Wes Davis' impressive, biographical ballad of Fanny Crosby entitled 'Her Story, His Song' (featured on the Word Records UK album, 'The Best Of Fanny Crosby - Blessed Assurance') has also been covered by Jerry Arhelger, Pat Boone, and George Hamilton IV. Indeed, nowadays thousands thrill again to the Fanny Crosby songs and story as George Hamilton IV and Wes Davis retell the events of her long life in their hugely successful, local-church based gospel concerts. Readers interested in booking George and Wes for such a concert can write to me for information.
The blind girl, Fanny Crosby had every reason it seemed to be bitter with her lot in life. Born of humble stock on 24th March 1820 in Putnam County, New York State, baby Frances Jane (known affectionately as Fanny) gazed around her, absorbing the colour and texture that surrounded her. Then tragedy struck! At six weeks old she developed an eye infection and the local, unqualified doctor was called. In error he prescribed a hot, mustard poultice to be place on her inflamed eyes. This incorrect treatment blinded her for life.
Fanny's conversion to personal faith in Christ came at an early age. From then on she hungered and thirsted after spiritual truth, wholeheartedly surrendering herself (including her so-called handicap of blindness) to her Saviour. In return she was given two wonderful gifts. The first was spiritual sight. With clear spiritual vision she was to gaze on eternal truths that she said Christless eyes never see. Secondly she was gifted with the ability to simply express the truths she perceived in rhyme and melody. Her life-long aspiration would be to serve the Saviour she saw clearly by faith.
Fanny's family, plagued by guilt and remorse for what the medical blunder had done to her sight, sent her to New York to see the noted, eye surgeon Dr. Valentine Mott to she if he could offer a cure for her blindness. After careful examination of her eyes the surgeon turned to her parents and said,
